2006 US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Girls Thanksgiving Interregional
Rosters Announced
Nation’s Top Girls Invited to Elite Competition and Player Development
US Youth Soccer ODP Rosters: 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1989/1990 United Rosters
FRISCO, Texas (November 9, 2006) – The annual US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Girls Thanksgiving Interregional was held at the North Community Park and Coral Glades High School Sportsplex in Coral Springs, Florida on November 18, for two days of training, with competition play beginning on the 20th and running through Friday, November 24.
Continuing its tradition of elite play, competition and player development, youth from the nation’s elite player identification and development program, US Youth Soccer ODP, trained and competed in front of U.S. Soccer National Team Staff and leading collegiate coaches to maximize their exposure for selection to National Teams and collegiate programs.
The US Youth Soccer ODP Girls Thanksgiving Interregional will represent teams in the 1989 - 1992 age groups including the U.S. Soccer Under-15 and Under-16 National Team Pools. For more information on the US Youth Soccer ODP Girls Thanksgiving Interregional, including schedules, visit
www.USYouthSoccer.org.
US Youth Soccer ODP is viewed as the premier identification and development program for the nation’s youth seeking the opportunity to compete at the national and collegiate levels of play.
“The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program is a vital part of the identification process for our youth national teams,” said U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Greg Ryan. “Creating an environment for the most talented girls to play with and against the best players possible not only allows for their maximum growth as players, but also allows the national team coaches to see who really has the qualities to play at the highest levels. The US Youth Soccer ODP gets a lot of the credit for the success of our youth national teams at all age levels.”
Initially created in 1977 as the US Youth Soccer Select Team Program, US Youth Soccer ODP was formed to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team could be selected for international competition. A girls program was added to US Youth Soccer in 1985.
The players must try out to qualify for the program's high-level training from carefully selected and licensed coaches through a series of trials at their local, State Association and then Regional levels. Those selected are exposed to the nation's best coaches, trainers and facilities.
US Youth Soccer ODP is the original Olympic development program and the only elite player development program that can claim members of Major League Soccer as well as a majority of current and past national and youth team members, as alumni. And, with programs in all 55 State Associations as well as regional and national championships and participation in international tournaments, US Youth Soccer ODP continues to lead the way. Kansas Boys ODP Coaches Have Banner Season
The KS Boys ODP Coaching Staff is made up of current College and Youth Coaches, former Collegiate, Professional, and National Team players. These coaches have not only made strides to help advance the ODP Program, they have produced exceptional accomplishments on the collegiate coaching scene as well. Joe Burger, 89’ Boys ODP Coach, led the Barton County Community College Cougars to the Jayhawk Conference title. Mike Dibbini, 92’ Boys ODP Coach, led the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference title. Kevin Wardlaw, 91’ Boys ODP Coach, led the MidAmerica Nazarene University Pioneers to the Heart of America Athletic Conference title. Each coach was named coach of the year in their respective conferences and each team produced numerous All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference players. Quality coaching and quality leadership have driven the recent changes for the ODP Program. As these two factors work together, the interest in Kansas ODP around the state has increased dramatically. More players are attending more training sessions and events that at any time in the past. Record numbers of players are being named to Regional Pools and watched by Region II Coaches.
Kansas Boys at Inter-Regional and International Events
It is a great honor to be called in for a Region Team competition. Only a few Kansas players over the past few years have made event teams. This year, KS 91’ Mohammad Ramahi and KS 89’ Coleton Henning, were asked to participate at the Boys ODP Fall Interregional Event, Nov. 24-28 in Austin, Texas. KS 88’ Michael Thomas represented Region II at the Boys '88 ODP Interregional Tournament, January 12-15, 2006 at the Home Depot Center. This event took place at the same time and location as the U18/U20 National Team Camps and MLS combine. Michael Thomas and Luke Gorczyca have also been invited to play at the Boys '88 International Tour - MIC Tournament in Barcelona, Spain on April 8-17.
2006 Kansas Boys Coach Of The Year
Gareth "Gags" Pritchard

Gareth “Gags” Pritchard, selected as the boys COTY, has coached both boys and girls teams to15 State Championships, one Regional Boy’s Championship, and then to the National Finals. Just recently his U23 girls came back for one last hurrah. The KCFC Revolution team went to the 24 Nationals Championship.
Gags has coached for various club teams over the past 20 years, most recently with KCFC (Kansas City Futball Club). His dedication and motivational coaching style have led to many awards, including NSCAA Region II coach of the Year; KSYSA’s 1998 Coach of the Year, USYSA’s Region II Coach of the Year for 1998, and 1998’s Umbro’s Region II Coach of the Year. Gags has also shared his love for the game as a Special Olympics Soccer Coordinator.
Pritchard, a native of Wales, played on the Welch U16 National Team. He played professionally for Cardiff City, and semi-professionally in Kansas City.
John and Jodie Seitzer’s son Ben plays on Gags’ U11 team. “We feel truly blessed to have Gags as our son’s coach. He understands and loves the game of soccer. And more importantly, he is a wonderful role model and has fostered a love for the game among the players.
2006 Kansas Girls Coach Of The Year
Barry Wallace
Barry Wallace, selected as the 2006 Girl’s COTY, coached two U12 girls’ teams for the Kansas City United Soccer Club along with friend and Co-coach Doug Williams. Moving from recreational to premiere three years ago, Barry and Doug lead these girls to eight 1st place finishes in leagues and tournaments, seven 2nd place finishes, and two 3rd place finishes (both in the first year.) Unfortunately, we lost this great coach to cancer on October 17, 2006.
Wallace grew up in England, playing soccer professionally for the Queens Park Rangers of the English First Division. He then came to the United States to play in the NASL (North American Soccer League) where he was a four-time all star. When the NASL folded in the early 80s, Barry moved on to the MISL playing for Wichita then the Kansas City Comets. After settling to raise his family in Kansas City, Barry went on to coach youth soccer for his daughter and son’s teams.
Barry worked tirelessly with his teams, but also volunteered to help other organizations train recreational coaches how to develop young soccer players. Barry’s players adored him—his quiet calm manner during games, and his humor and challenging pace to keep practices engaging. He urged his players to grow and develop on their own by assigning homework, or staying after practice to give individual help. Taylor Andrews, one of Barry’s players, said “Barry has lots of respect for everyone on the team and helps encourage us to strive to become better soccer players.” Roxanne, Taylor’s mom said “Once in school my daughter was asked who has had the most influence in your life this past year. Her answer was Barry Wallace, My soccer coach.”
After being diagnosed with cancer, Barry continued to come to practices and games to guide these girls, despite the pain and discomfort—a sure example of his strength of character and love for the game. At Barry’s large and beautiful memorial service there was a room filled with young girls who had learned the game from him along with their families. It is safe to say that “Coach Barry” will long be remembered as a great coach by many people.
2005 Kansas Boys Coach Of The Year
Fred Schlichting

Fred Schlichting, selected as the Boys COTY, coached the U15 BV Stars – Grasshoppers team that won the 2005 Kansas State Cup and advanced to Regionals. Schlichting has coached the Grasshoppers (formerly KC Legends) for five years, winning State Cups with this team in the U12, U13, U14 and U15 divisions.
Schlichting's coaching experience includes serving as UMKC's Assistant Coach, Kansas ODP Head Coach for the Boys 86 and 87 teams, the assistant varsity soccer coach at Rockhurst High School and St. Teresa's Academy in Kansas City, and guest coach at the Kansas City Wizards Youth Training Academy.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schlichting played soccer at DeSmet Jesuit High School and played collegiately for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
“I have learned so many new things while having Fred as a coach. He constantly reminds us at practice and games to play to our fullest ability and be able to go out of the game knowing that you just gave 100%,” says youth player Tanner Nebbia. “He always tells us to be creative, but not too creative, to have confidence within ourselves, and to take a risk every once in a while.”
2005 Kansas Girls Coach Of The Year
Derek Shoare

Derek Shoare, selected as the Girls COTY, coached the U18 Girls KC Dynamos team that advanced from the 2005 Kansas State Cup and Region II Cup to finishing fourth at the 2005 US Youth Soccer National Championships.
Shoare has been coaching for over 20 years. In 2004, he became the coach of the Dynamos, taking a team that had just lost their first State Cup in the team's history. The following year, he refocused the girls, most of which would be attending NCAA Division I schools, on what was important, strengthening their bond as teammates and friends. He successfully pushed each player to her potential, giving each an incredible year to remember.
Words of praise and encouragement are what you hear from the sideline. His enthusiasm is contagious. His expectations are simple: Be on time, hustle, fulfill your promise and support your team. Every summer, Shoare provides a training session (non-paid) with the sole purpose to help former players he has coached prepare for their college season. He is well known in the soccer community by club and college coaches.
Shoare holds a European Coaching license along with the Advanced National Diploma issued by the NSCAA. He recruits, hires and trains soccer coaches throughout the United States for Challenger Sports.
“I can't say enough about the things he does for these girls that are so above and beyond the call of a coach. He attends their high school games, and has even attended their university games! He puts so much of himself out there for them to lean on and learn from. He has provided so much more than just how to play soccer. He has taught them how to be great people and ambassadors for the sport of soccer,” says Shelley Kelly, Dynamos team manager.

2004 Kansas Girls Coach Of The Year
Terry E Denker of Topeka

Terry first began coaching with the Topeka Wolves Boys team in 1992. Since that time he has continued to coach the Wolves, the Blue Devils, and with the Topeka Extreme. He has continued to improve his knowledge of the game, holding USSF E and D licenses, and retaining membership of the NSCAA for the last four years.
Terry places a strong emphasis on the positive aspects of his players' performance, believing that the desire for improvement as a player is more important than the result of any individual game. This has led many of his players to successful participation in both ODP and a number of high school programs.
2004 Kansas Boys Coach Of The Year
Mauro Nobre of Lawrence

Mauro has worked with youth soccer in the Lawrence area for many years, starting in the early 1980's with recreational teams, to the present day, coaching both with the Kaw Valley Soccer Association, and the Kansas Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP). He has continued to evolve as a coach, and currently holds the USSF C license. Mauro sees sportsmanship as being as valuable as winning, and incorporates this message both at practice and at in-game situations. He has introduced a futsal program in Lawrence, giving players a great opportunity to continue their development through the winter months.
Kempin on U-15 National Team
Kansas resident Jonathon Kempin recently participated in the Thanksgiving weekend Inter-Regional in Florida. Jonathon was the Region II goalkeeper where he posted 3 outstanding performances. He was identified as one of the top goalkeepers in his age group and has been invited to participate in the Nike Friendlies as part of the U-15 National Team from Dec. 3-9th in Bradenton, FL. The Nike Friendlies are on annual event hosted by US Soccer where top US Teams and international clubs are invited to compete in a highly competitive Tournament in Bradenton, FL.

Welcome Brian Bliss!
Former MLS Player and Coach is #1 Pick for
Director of Coaching

Olathe , Kansas (February 21, 2007) – Brian Bliss, most recently of the Kansas City Wizards, has been hired by the Kansas State Youth Soccer Association as the State Director of Coaching. Bliss, an American soccer player and coach, will lead the coaching education programs for the largest not-for-profit youth development soccer organization in Kansas .
Bliss brings a wealth of knowledge to youth players, parents, coaches and other soccer enthusiasts. “His playing experience alone is enough to help the thousands of young athletes across the state see opportunities to realize their dreams,” says Bob Riggs, Executive Director for Kansas Youth Soccer.
Born in Webster , New York , Bliss starred as a youth in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) in New York State and was selected to play for the US Youth National Team. While attending Southern Connecticut State University, Bliss began his US National team experience in 1984 that ended in 1995 competing in Copa America in Uruguay .
“I am honored to be given an opportunity to work at Kansas Youth Soccer and with its youth members. As we know, the future of the game lies within in our youth. The opportunity to make a contribution with the young players and help grow the game in Kansas is something that is important to me, and I am looking forward to the challenge,” says Bliss.
In 1987, Bliss was the number one overall draft pick in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) being selected by the Cleveland Force. In 1988, he joined the US Olympic Team that played in Seoul , Korea . Two years later, Bliss found himself playing in Italy as a member of the US World Cup team. Following his US National Team experience, Bliss went to Europe, playing in the German Bundesliga for FC Chemnitz and FC Carl Zeiss Jena .
When Major League Soccer (MLS) began its first season in 1996, Bliss joined the Columbus Crew for which he played a season and a half. He later played for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and finally with the KC Wizards.
After retiring from the MLS, Bliss became the head coach for the Connecticut Wolves A-League team and later joined the KC Wizards, serving as the assistant coach and later, head coach. During that time, the Wizards were the 2000 MLS Cup Champions, 2000 Supporter's Shield Winners and the 2004 US Open Cup Champions.
Former General Manager of the Wizards, Curt Johnson, now Director of Marketing for the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team, thinks Bliss is a great addition to Kansas Youth Soccer. “Brian is a ‘go-to' guy that has access to resources at his fingertips. He is excellent with all age groups, all levels – youth and adult. Over all the years I have known him, he is one person that I put at the top of any list. He is always willing to do more.”
Bliss will focus on getting the soccer community more involved in coaching and parent education. His first tasks will be to meet with the members of Kansas Youth Soccer and see what steps are needed to elevate the development of youth players and coaches not just in the Kansas City area but statewide. Bliss is a tremendous individual that has the respect of soccer people across the country. Over the next year, Kansas Youth Soccer will be doing more outreach in western Kansas to help organize leagues and grow soccer. Kansas Youth Soccer President Alan Blinzler notes, “Brian's commitment to the development of players is second only to his passion for the game. We are thrilled to have him as part of our team”
